Nikka Whisky From The Barrel Review
If you like a bold, rich whisky, this will put a smile on your face and a song in your heart. Nikka Whisky From The Barrel is one of the best and most affordable Japanese whiskies in the UK.
It has become famous for its powerful confidence and complex taste. This complexity derives from its unusual creation. From The Barrel is a blend of both grain and malt whiskies from their coastal distillery, Yoichi, and Miyagikyo in the mountains. It’s aged in a an array of ex-bourbon barrels, ex-sherry butts and other puncheons. You would think this makes a confused concoction, but don’t worry. Nikka From The Barrel knows exactly what it is.
Fun Facts about Nikka From The Barrel
• First released in Japan in 1985
• Has won many awards, notably WWA Best Japanese Blended Whisky 2009
• 51.4 % ABV – markedly higher than its usual Japanese whisky counterparts.
Nikka From The Barrel – Neat
Oh, this whisky is not messing around. This Nikka may be a blend but has a dominant presence that refuses to be ignored. It slaps you in the face, then takes you out to dinner (in a good way.)
Nose – Sandalwood, spices, orange peel.
Palate – Cinnamon and a tiny tease of toffee.
Nikka From The Barrel – Water Drops
Add a little water, and this whisky really comes alive.
Nose – Floral scent emerging.
Palate – distinct toffee, buttery-goodness with a vanilla edge.
Nikka From The Barrel – Half Rock
This is the best way to enjoy this whisky. Cold to the tongue but with full flavour and deep fragrance.
Nose – Toffee smell are noticeable in the scent now, with a spring freshness of flowers and cut grass.
Palate – creamy vanilla ice cream with a hint of citrus.
Nikka From The Barrel – Mizuwari (水割り)
Although mizuwari (Japanese highball) depletes the full flavour, it’s the ideal way to enjoy this whisky with a meal.
Nose – a faint, delicate floral and citrus scent.
Palate – Any trace of spice has gone but berry fruit flavours start to emerge.
Verdict:
Because of its complexity, I urge you to try the Nikka from The Barrel in all forms to find your favourite. I find the half rock method is my favourite for an even balance of flavours and scent.
