Gekkeikan Petit Moon Mitsuru Tsuki Daiginjo Sake

Just look at that bottle. This fun-size sake looks like a tiny potion bottle from a J-RPG. Also, the deep navy colour and celestial branding is letting me live my full Sailor Moon fantasy*.

But enough of the superficial. Gekkeikan Petit Moon Mitsuru Tsuki Sake is a Junmai Daiginjo sake (no alcohol added, rice polished to 50%). This thorough production process helps creates is sweet, delicate flavour and fragrant aroma.


Moon Viewing Parties

With its handy size and beautiful shape, this sake is ideal for Moon viewings (Tsukimi 月見) or Otsukimi お月見). Tsukimi is a celebration where friends and family view the harvest moon, typically on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. This year (2019) Tsukimi will be on the 13th of September.

Moon viewing parties typically involve admire the beauty of the moon, eating delicious food (such as Tsukimi dango) and of course, toasting with sake.


How do I drink Gekkeikan Petit Moon Mitsuru Tsuki Daiginjo Sake?

Like many modern Junmai sakes, the Petit Moon Mitsuru is delicious chilled. Simply pour from the fridge to enjoy.

However, due to its rounded body it can also be enjoyed warmed to 40-50 DC. It’s a pretty universal sake that can be amended to suit your taste.


Where can I buy Gekkeikan Petit Moon Mitsuru Tsuki Daiginjo Sake?

This mysterious little sake can be hard to find. However you can purchase 135ml bottles from the Japan Centre.


 Tasting notes:

Appearance: Colourless

Length: Medium

Body: Light

Aroma (chilled): creamy, yoghurts notes with a very light pear and yuzu nose.

Taste (chilled): Distinct, sweet fruit flavours, including melon and banana topped with cream.

Aroma (warm): Heat brings out the starchy notes, such as the rice and chestnuts

Taste (warm): Sharp fruit, rounded by more earthy brown sugar.

Pairing: Gekkeikan Petit Moon is sweet and delicate, so pairing with seafood such as sashimi will be delightful.
